The Mettler Toledo MX5 is a high-precision microbalance from the renowned Excellence XP/MX Series, engineered for ultra-trace weighing applications that demand a readability of 1 µg (0.001 mg / 0.000001 g)​ with a maximum capacity of 5.1 g (5,100 mg). Designed for pharmaceutical quality control, life science research (protein/DNA quantification), nanomaterial formulation, environmental filter weighing, and precious metal assay, the MX5 delivers the extreme sensitivity and long-term stability required when every microgram counts.

At its core is Mettler Toledo's refined MonoBloc® electromagnetic force restoration (EMFR) weighing cell, housed in a completely separated weighing terminal to eliminate thermal influence from the display electronics. The cell offers a guaranteed repeatability of 0.8 µg (0–2 g range) and 0.9 µg at full load, with a linearity deviation of typically ±1.5 µg (max. ±4 µg). To preserve this level of accuracy, the MX5 is equipped with ProFACT® (Professional Fully Automatic Calibration Technology), which performs internal calibration and linear adjustment automatically when a significant temperature shift is detected or at a user-defined time interval—no manual initiation or external weights required for daily verification.

Usability is enhanced by a color graphical touchscreen terminal​ with menu-guided navigation, support for up to eight personalized user interfaces, and SmartSens™ IR sensors​ that allow non-contact tare, print, or draft-shield door open/close via hand gestures—minimizing sample contamination and static transfer from finger contact. The LevelControl™ system​ and Status Lights (TrafficLight)​ visually alert users to leveling issues or unstable conditions before weighing begins. A motorized, three-wall detachable glass draft shield (usable height 55 mm) provides easy access to the Ø27 mm stainless-steel pan while shielding the sample from air currents.

The MX5 includes a comprehensive suite of built-in applications: basic weighing, differential/gravimetric weighing, piece counting, percent weighing, density determination (via under-pan hook), statistics, pipette calibration check, and MinWeigh—which enforces a minimum sample mass threshold per USP Chapter <41> to ensure results fall within acceptable uncertainty limits. Data integrity features include user password management, calibration logs, and audit trail capability; the RS-232C and LocalCAN interfaces support GLP/GMP-compliant printouts with date/time stamps and connectivity to printers, PCs, or LIMS. Optional second RS-232, MiniMettler, or Ethernet modules are available. Firmware can be updated in the field using Mettler Toledo's E-Loader software.

Though officially phased out and succeeded by the XPR/XPE microbalance family, the MX5 remains a benchmark microbalance—celebrated for its 1-µg resolution, separated sensor architecture, ProFACT automation, and robust all-metal construction that continues to serve high-end analytical laboratories reliably.
